Pest Control at Viridor GRREC
Our client is a state-of-the-art residual waste treatment facility. The facility became fully operational on 28th January 2019, producing enough energy to power the equivalent of 26,496 households and heat the equivalent of some 8,000 homes, in addition to delivering a saving of 90,000 tonnes of CO² every year.

Challenge

Our client has major issues with pests due to the nature of the plant set-up. It is an ideal breeding ground for pests as water is available, there are no predators, and they offer good shelter with unlimited food waste supply. If left unchecked, pests can quickly multiply and become a serious problem. Pests can pose a serious health and safety risk to both workers and the public. They can spread diseases, and, in some cases, they can also cause fires by gnawing through electrical cables. Pest control is essential to prevent such risks. Here at SOLIS Group, we pride ourselves on humanely tackling pest control and abide by all laws and acknowledge that the use of certain traps to prolong and create suffering for the animal is completely cruel and something we would never do. All our on-site technicians are qualified in pest control via BPCA (British Pest Control Association).

Solution

On first assessment of the site layout, we started to eliminate low level gaps first as these are the most likely areas for pests to enter, some pests only require a gap of 15mm to gain entry to a structure. A major issue was the number of pests accessing the plant and surrounding areas via the kerbs and sewerage system. The kerbs are fitted with drainage holes which create an ideal tunnel passage for the pests, allowing them to travel via the drainage system. To eradicate these access points, all kerbs on site were covered with metal mesh to stop the pests using them without effecting the drainage system. The next focus point was the removal of potential nesting sites by landscaping the outside areas of the Waste Plant and keeping it clean and tidy, cutting back overgrown areas and clearing any piles of wood or debris. After the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) performed an audit due to complaints from residents of large flocks of birds causing noise pollution and defecating everywhere. To move the birds from the roof of the building we set up bird spikes to limit the areas of the roof that the birds can perch on, so that on-site staff and visitors can enter and leave the building with less risk of being caught in the firing line of birds defecating. As the birds will not land on the spikes there is no harm caused by the spikes being on the front side of the building.

Impact

By consistently monitoring our performance and providing transparent results with our clients we can both work together to focus on the hot spot areas with the end goal of preventing the pests from entering these areas of the plant.

Services

Our technicians produce live reports daily with photographic evidence of areas that are heavily infested and look at different methods to analyse which methods work best to eradicate the pests within the area. QR codes are available on site for staff to report sightings as well which then is another source of data that we use as part of our reporting. A full monthly report is produced to show percentage of catches vs methods and percentage of catches month vs month.
