Marks & Spencer is a major British multinational retailer, headquartered in London, specialising in clothing, beauty products, home goods, and food. With over 950 stores across the UK, including 615 food-only outlets, M&S remains a trusted name in British retail.

Challenge
The client required a full replacement of their plant room water heating system at the Livingston store. This included removing outdated water heaters—one of which was inactive—and replacing them with modern, efficient units. The space was evaluated for equipment placement, access, ventilation, and routing of flue systems and service pipework. Additionally, a thermal insulation package was needed to improve system efficiency and safety.
Solution
Solis Group assigned a team to carry out the works in three stages. The process included:
  •  Removal of the inactive water heater, transportation of new units to the rooftop plant room.
  • Removal of the active water heater, siting of new units, and commencement of pipework connections.
  •  Completion of gas lines and service pipework, replacement of the return pump, full system testing, and commissioning of both new water heaters.
An SSSTS (Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme) qualified supervisor was present onsite each day to liaise directly with the store operations team and management. This ensured continuous communication, smooth coordination, and full compliance with health and safety standards throughout the project.
All works adhered to safety and operational protocols, with digital sign-off from the store manager on each visit. The thermal insulation package was applied following installation to ensure operational efficiency and regulatory compliance.

The project was executed with minimal disruption to store operations and within the planned timeframe. The client now benefits from:
  • Improved heating reliability and system efficiency.
  • Reduced maintenance needs through modernised infrastructure.
  • Compliance with current energy standards and enhanced safety.
